The appropriation of music for rallies and political initiatives often comes with a lack of understanding about the intent of the song and the songwriter. One of the songs most often misused as a patriotic anthem is Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." Although often misinterpreted as a flag-waving anthem, Springsteen wrote it as a protest song from the perspective of a Vietnam veteran who became disillusioned with America based on the treatment he and his fellow veterans were receiving.
