People's Songs was founded in 1945 by Pete Seeger, Alan Lomax, Lee Hays, and other artist-activists to "create, promote, and distribute songs of labor and the American people." In 1948, the organization put all of its efforts behind presidential candidate Henry Wallace and his platform, gathering and printing songs, performing at campaign rallies, and voicing its confidence in his progressive ideas.
